Monster Mail Day came to life after several conversations between Eddie and I regarding nostalgia in art. The idea here is that, as opposed to direct nostalgia, where we associate feelings and memories with particular subjects or characters from the past, indirect nostalgia regarding time periods or anachronisms from earlier days can be just as powerful in shaping the way we feel about them.
Before the internet, the mailbox functioned as a sort of gateway or portal to the outside world. I remember waiting on letters from extended family, friends, and crushes, checking for deliveries of mail ordered items (there was no such thing as tracking), catalogs, magazine subscriptions - the list goes on. Especially for those of us who were more rural, the mailbox, and trips to the mailbox, still hold strong in a space of our memory.
Eddie was the perfect artist for this job and we are thrilled with how this production came together. A huge amount of work went into the design, and Emi Giovannini worked her expertise to help us get this ready for manufacturing.
